History
Verne Gagne broke away from the NWA in 1960 to form the AWA, which dominated the Upper Midwest for two decades with Gagne, Nick Bockwinkel and later the Road Warriors. It lost Hulk Hogan and much of its talent to the WWF’s national expansion in the mid-1980s and closed in 1991.
