The company
History
Vince McMahon bought the company from his father in 1982 and broke the territory system by going national with cable TV, Hulk Hogan and WrestleMania in 1985. After the early-1990s steroid and scandal years came the New Generation of Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, then the Attitude Era of Steve Austin, The Rock and D-Generation X, which beat WCW in the Monday Night War. A lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund forced the switch to the WWE name in 2002.
